“And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure and wondered”. Mark 6:48-51 KJV
The fact that the storms had arisen on the sea, was enough worries for the disciples. That was a source of fear and apprehension. They were battling the fear! What added to their troubles was the sight of a figure which looked to them, like a ghost. They were alarmed! They were troubled!
I have read this verse over and again. It looked funny to me that these men were afraid of a ghost but that was their reality. A ghost walking on the sea was another dimension of fright. These men cried out in fear, not because they knew it was Jesus but to express their helplessness.
They were really troubled and traumatized, but Jesus showed up in this situation. He is the very present help in time of need. He hears our faintest heart cries; He knows when we are in trouble, confused and perplexed. He is nearby even when we don’t know He is or when we fail to see Him in our situations. He would not want us to be drowned in our situations. In the middle of the storms of life, Jesus is ever present; not only when situations are calm and rosy.
In our moments of fear and despair, Lord, may we hear your voice. May we experience your intervention. May we see you; may hope be restored; may encouragement come. May we continue to advance together with you in fulfilling purpose. Amen!
